Designer Bookbinders currently organise two bookbinding competitions. The society has annually sponsored and promoted The Bookbinding Competition since January 1975, when it assumed responsibility for the Thomas Harrison Memorial Competition, founded in 1957. For many years the Competition entries have been exhibited in The British Library, London - for 2007 the exhibition venue was The John Rylands University Library, Manchester.
The society's first International Bookbinding Competition - in conjunction with the Bodleian Library, Oxford exhibition project ‘An Artful Craft - Fine and Historic Bookbindings from the Broxbourne Library and Other Collections’ - was held in June 2009.
