Balram Halwai, The White Tiger, is the desperate narrator and anti hero of this satirical novel set in today's 'new' India. He begins in the rural 'darkness', a world of landlord and peasant. And when he escapes to the 'light' of the cities, it is into a world of servants and masters.

When luck and a ruthless eye land him a driving job in New Delhi with one of the landlords' families, he gradually seizes the (immoral) opportunity to break away from his lot in life.
