Collect 2018

In February 2018 Designer Bookbinders exhibited work of some of it's members at the Crafts Councils's international art fair for contemporary objects, entitled 'Collect'. This took place at The Saatchi Gallery in London from 22-25 February, and they joined 35 international galleries showcasing a selection of wonderful new bindings from 23 Fellows, Licentiates and invited binders who exhibited and sold their work.

In addition to one of the main stands, Annette Friedrich took over one of the Crafts Council's five 'Spotlight Stands'. The Collect Spotlights are a handful of galleries, or in DB's case societies, that are selected to exhibit experimental work displayed in innovative ways that seek to challenge, excite and create discussion around the aisles of the fair.

'Woolf I - IX' by Annette Friedrich
'Woolf I - IX' is a new series of fine bindings that encompasses all of Virginia Woolf's nine novels. 'Woolf - IX' was the result of Friedrich's project called 'On a stroll with Mrs. Woolf'. Over the course of seven years, the artist had bound the books in chronological order, developing a fractionalized visual language that is in parallel with Woolf's explicit experimental style of writing. Each book is a stepping stone to the next.

Text excerpts, design sketches, and diary notes threw a light on both makers' quest to shape a new kind of language within their respective settings. Moments of vision are highlighted, as well as those of doubt. Two makers journey, two makers in the making. Annette Friedrich was present throughout the show.
